12 Practical Magic Crochet Patterns

12 Practical Magic Crochet Patterns

If you’re dreaming of cozy boho earthy witchy Fall crochet makes inspired by the film Practical Magic, then you’re in the right place because in this video I’m going to share 12 Practical Magic inspired crochet patterns to make. From the eccentric style of Aunt Frances to the wild and free-spirted style of Gillian, the ultimate purple witchy vibes of Aunt Jet to the grounded and nurturing whimsigoth, botanical style of Sally.

Hi if you’re new here my name is Sterling and I’m the artist here behind Cactus Lady Creation. Each week I share my journey as an artist and aesthetic and niche round ups like this. So if you’re into that make sure to subscribe.

I’ve separated each of these patterns into each of the main characters: Sally Owens, Gillian Owens, Aunt Frances and Aunt Jet. And I’ve put direct links to each pattern over on my blog which is linked in the description box below.

Sally Owens:

Sally Owens Lace Tank by Bloodroot Arts, see the pattern here.

First is Sally Owens, who basically lives in cozy layers. Her style features cardigans over dresses, loose cable knits, the iconic floral-print slip dress, simple tanks paired with denim, rose prints, maxi skirts, and, of course, that famous green botanical set from 1998 Blumarine.

So the first pattern we’re going to tackle is the Sally Owens Lace Tank by Bloodroot Arts. This one is specifically inspired by the iconic crochet tank that Sally wears in the film. It’s free on Ravelry and is made to measure. The pattern is worked in two panels, which are then sewn together and finished with straps, a lace hem, and scalloped edging.

The pattern also includes stitch and row counts for an extra-small size. It’s rated intermediate, although I think a confident beginner could definitely take this on. You’ll need to be comfortable taking your own measurements since the piece is made to measure, and there is some shaping involved.

It also uses filet crochet to create that beautiful lace design, so it’s a little ambitious, but I think the finished piece is absolutely worth it. I also really love the amount of coverage this design provides on top, while still keeping that delicate, romantic look.

Tunisian Sunflower Sweater by Cato Crafting Shop, see the pattern here.

The next piece that I thought was similar to this other beautiful knitted sweater Sally is wearing when she’s walking outside with Aunt Frances and Jet is this tunisian sunflower sweater by Cato Crafting. It uses tunisian crochet to make to get the knit-like look and it is worked in a top-down made to measure as you go construction and easy to adjust to git your own size. This one is made to measure as well and the design can be made with or without the sunflower motif as well, if you could get a chart similar to the flowers on Sally’s sweater you could easily use this general construction as well to make those flowers as well and this one is a paid pattern on their Etsy.

Rose Garden Skirt by Crochet by Belladonna, see the pattern here.

I also love this long maxi floral skirt she is wearing here, and thought the best way to replicate that look with crochet is this Rose Garden Skirt by Crochet by Belladonna. It is a free pattern on the hobbii website. It has sizes XXS to XXL. The skirt is crocheted from the bottom up and working from side to side following a grid pattern to create a flower pattern with double crochet. In order to ensure a snug fit you can add an elastic band as well as the final step, and this one is more of an intermediate make.

Grainne Pocket Cardigan by Crochet with Carrie, see the pattern here.

Next is this sweater that sally wears that is oversized and I love the big pockets on it, and one similar to it that I found was the Grainne Pocket Cardigan by Crochet with Carrie. It’s a free pattern on the website, and it’s got sizes Small to 3XL. It’s constructed from five panels, the front, back panels and two sleeves, then you sew the pocket to the cardigan to finish it off. It’s beginner friendly and the special stitches were the herringbone double crochet, and this one would be a cozy make for Fall for sure.

Gillian Owens:

Now I have a few Gillian Owens inspired patterns. Gillian’s style features slip minis, floral maxis and free flowing hair, shows midriff, mini skirts. She wears lots of florals and cardigans but definitely has more of a rebellious and wild woman kind of vibe overall.

Bobble Stitch Cardigan by AC Crochets, see the pattern here.

So the first pattern is the bobble stitch cardigan by AC Crochets. This one is a paid pattern that is free on the YouTube channel. This one is made to measure so you can make it perfectly fit you, and first you make the first and back panels then the sleeves, attach the sleeves, and work the cuffs and ribbing to finish it off. And of course you can add buttons on it to make it more like Gillians’.

Floral Cardigan by Cosy Bear Cardigan, see the pattern here.

Next is this floral cardigan that I love that she wears with a floral skirt, and I thought this flower meadow jumper by Cosy Bear Crochet. This piece usually uses the high double crochet and features slightly oversized sleeves and single crochet ribbing on the cuffs and neckline. It is a paid pattern on their Etsy, and it features sizes XS to 3XL, and I love the flowers on the back and front of this piece.

Hibiscus Skirt by Crochetlin Patterns, see the pattern here.

I also love this floral skirt that Gillian wears paired with the gloves on this look. It is a paid pattern on their Etsy shop. So, I found this hibiscus skirt by Crochetlin Patterns that is a fun make. This one is a perfect one to make and wear at the beach or in warmer weather, but it could also be fun to layer with tights, and it is made to measure as well so you can easily make it for any size and it is more intermediate level because it does use the tapestry method to make that hibiscus motif.

Sand Sunhat by MJ's Off the Hook Designs, see the pattern here.

Here is a sand sunhat similar to Gillian’s by MJ’s Off the Hook Designs. It is made by holding together two strands of dish yarn together to get stiff and bulky shaping and it is beginner friendly and free on their website. It is crocheted from the top down and starts with the crown increases. The hat body is worked in a simple textured stitch using single and double crochet followed by a sturdy brim. And there are four different sizes for this one, two baby sizes for 6-12 months, 18-24 months, child and adult so you could make one for everyone in the family with this one.

Filet Flower Gloves by Mun Sanara, see the pattern here.

These filet flower gloves by Mun Sanara are also fun. This one is a video tutorial on their channel and to make it you start with extended double crochet rows, and you work it you start from the wrist and work it down to the fingers and you add the flowers in as you go along which is really clever I thought and she shows how to customize it to fit your hands specifically and I want to create this to make and wear to all of the garden tea parties.

Aunt Frances & Aunt Jet

Alright now I have a few patterns inspired by Aunt Frances and Jet. Frances is the more adventurous one with smokier eyeshadow, wilder hair with accessories, exaggerated wide brimmed hats and caftan adjacent pieces while Aunt jet has a similar silhouette she wears certainly has a maximalist style with the bee-keeper style hat, and purple accessories.

Wrapped Lace Necklace by Kirsten Holloway Designs, see the pattern here.

So this first design is wrapped lace necklace by Kristen Holloway Designs. It reminds me of all of the neck jewelry that especially Aunt Frances loves to wear. It is more intermediate level to make, and the special stitch to make is the 3 double crochet cluster. I love the ribbon in this design and the victorian style of this design and it is free over on their blog.

Lotus Choker by Aurein Crochet, see the pattern here.

Another lovely necklace is this lotus choker by Aure.in Crochet. This one is also free or pay what you want so I highly suggest giving something to support their work and it’s on their website and is advanced beginner level, the only special stitch is the puff stitch with 5 loop draws and picot stitch.  I love how detailed this one is and how to create it you make a flower, then the leaves, tie the strings, work the lotus and the details, and I love the beads and charms they added as well, the bee charm specifically makes me think of Aunt Jet and her bee-keeper garden loving influenced style.

Crochet Kimono by Casttañaz Crochets, see the pattern here.

I also love this crochet kimono by Casttañaz Crochets. This pattern features a piece that is Small/Medium and it is made to measure and shows how to adjust to fit you. It uses the star stitch to create and it’s free on their YouTube channel as a video tutorial, I love the botanical vibe of this piece and feel like it’s something that either aunt would wear.

Leaf & Flower Earrings by Crochet Designs Patterns, see the pattern here.

Another one that I feel like Aunt Jet would wear is the leaf and flower earrings by crochet designs patterns. It’s a paid pattern in their Etsy shop and the special stitch is the puff stitch, and you do use 2 earwigs to create it, and I love the rounded beads and diamond stones on this one. This is definitely a statement piece and is perfect in that perfect color of course.

Well I hope you enjoyed this round up of patterns. Also have you watched the newest Practical Magic yet? I still haven’t yet, but I’m planning on going soon so please no spoilers in the comments but let me know if it’s worth seeing it.
