20 Filet Crochet Patterns You’ll Fall in Love With

Before filet crochet became the relaxing, grid-like craft we know today, it had its roots in a much older textile tradition called filet lace, also known historically as lacis or opus araneum.

This form of decorative needlework dates back to at least the 14th century, when artisans across Europe used a knotted net as a base, embroidering patterns onto the mesh to create everything from altar cloths to household linens.

According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, this embroidery-on-net style, referred to as filet lace or filet brodé, became widespread in Europe by the 16th century, especially in Italy and France, where lace-making was a thriving art form.

These early forms of filet lace required hours of meticulous handwork—first creating the net, then carefully stitching the design. Fast forward a few centuries to the 19th century, when crochet was booming as a more accessible and economical way to imitate expensive lace.

Women began using simple crochet stitches—primarily double crochet and chain stitches—to recreate the look of filet lace. This adaptation became what we now call filet crochet. It gained massive popularity in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, when publications like The Priscilla Filet Crochet Book (1915) taught readers how to make everything from lace curtains and bedspreads to alphabet samplers and religious motifs using this new approach.

Filet crochet became especially appealing because it allowed crafters to produce detailed pictorial motifs—florals, animals, initials, and even entire scenes—using a grid system made with yarn or thread (Interweave – “The Origins of Filet Crochet”). And the charm of this method? It’s basically like pixel art with yarn.

And to celebrate this gorgeous filet crochet technique I have created a list of 20 patterns for this video, and will separate them into four different categories: Home Decor, Accessories, Tops and 2-piece sets & Dresses.

And as always you can find all of the links to the exact patterns that I mention over on my blog, which is linked in the description box below.
