As winter approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is just around the corner! On December 21st, we’ll experience the shortest, darkest day of the year—a moment many of us honor as the beginning of winter and a celebration of the sun’s slow rebirth.
To mark this magical time, I’m sharing 20 crochet patterns inspired by the Winter Solstice. These designs will bring warmth and beauty to your season.

First up is the Winter Hexie Blanket by Nautikrall Crochet. Measuring 48 x 52 inches, this gorgeous blanket is made up of 108 hexagons, arranged in a 9-by-12 layout. Each hexagon is 5 inches across and worked in 4 rounds, with the only special stitch required being the double crochet 2 together (dc2tog).

However, the pattern also includes charts for those who prefer them, so you’ll need some familiarity with tapestry crochet charts.

Northern Lights Potholder by Lilla Bjorn Crochet, see the pattern here.
First up is the Northern Lights Potholder by Lilla Bjorn Crochet. This cleverly constructed potholder features two layers: the top layer with a structured zigzag cabled pattern and the bottom flat layer made with the main color. It measures 7 3/4 inches (19.5 cm) and uses special stitches like the front post double crochet (fpdc) and front post treble two together (fptr2tog). This pattern is free on their blog.

Or make this Snowflake Garland by Yarnspirations. Each snowflake measures 5 inches in diameter and the garland measures 55 inches long by 5 in wide and the special stitches used are the chain 4 picot, chain 6 picot, trefoil and beaded chain. This one is great because it’s perfect for just general winter decor as well and it’s free on their website.
Yule Baubles by Merry Mandrake, see the pattern here.
I also adore these Pagan Yule Baubles by Merry Mandrake. The pattern includes five unique designs: a Sun, Horn, Star, Pinecone, and Acorn. These baubles are a paid pattern available on Ravelry.
I absolutely love how distinctive these designs are! They would make your tree truly stand out, or you could even use them to create a stunning garland.

Or make these North Star Christmas Ornaments by Yarnspirations! Each ornament measures 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter. You’ll work them in the round, starting with the first side, then the second side, and finishing with a hanging loop. The stars are embroidered with a lazy daisy stitch for a beautiful, detailed design.
This pattern is free on their website, and these ornaments are a great way to use up scrap yarn! You can even stuff them with small yarn scraps, making sure nothing goes to waste.

This Star Bright Crochet Table Runner by Susan Lowman at Red Heart is another fun project! It’s perfect for adding a festive touch to your mantle and measures 15 inches by 50 inches. Each star in the design measures 6 inches in diameter. The special stitches used are the double crochet cluster, treble crochet cluster, and two treble double crochet cluster.
I unfortunately forgot to include this one in the video, but I wanted to make sure to share it here on the blog because it’s just so gorgeous. This pattern is free on their website, and it also makes a lovely gift. They’ve even included a helpful chart for connecting all of the stars together.
Poinsettia Ornament by Kristen Halloway Design, see the pattern here.
I also love this Poinsettia Ornament by Kristen Halloway Designs. Poinsettias are a well-known symbol of Christmas, representing the Star of Bethlehem, as well as rebirth, hope, and peace. I thought they would be perfect for our Winter Solstice Patterns, especially with their vibrant red color, symbolizing the returning sun.
The special stitches used are the picot and back post single crochet (bpsc). Each poinsettia measures 4 1/4 inches across.
These are perfect for creating a garland or ornament, and the pattern is available for free on their website.

Solstice Granny by Crochet for You, see the pattern here.
First up is the Solstice Granny Square by Crochet For You. This design is lovely because it strikes the perfect balance—not too thick, yet not too lacy—making it ideal for creating a light, cozy blanket. If you use worsted weight yarn, each square measures 6.25 inches, and with DK yarn, it measures 5.5 inches. The special stitch used is the V stitch. This pattern is available for free on their blog.

Or try the Moonlit Forest Granny by Merry Mandrake. This design features a ring of spruce trees with a central sun or moon. I also loved this Christmas Crochet Square by Crafting Each Day. Each square measures 8 inches and is worked in the round.
The texture in this design is wonderful, and I especially liked how it combines a round shape, reminiscent of the sun, with a snowflake design. It’s a beautiful blend of warmth and winter! This pattern is available for free on their blog.

Or try this Snowflake by The Lazy Hobby Hopper. This design measures 5.5 inches when worked with light worsted weight yarn. The special stitches used are the double crochet two together (dc2tog) and double crochet three together (dc3tog).
This pattern is available for free on their blog, and it also includes lots of helpful pictures to guide you along the way.
Solstice Square by Hodge Podge Crochet, see the pattern here.
The Solstice Sun Rising Square by Hodge Podge Crochet is another beautiful design. It measures 12 inches square and is inspired by the rising sun at dawn. The square features a sunburst motif at the center, radiating outward. The special stitches used are treble, double treble, P Stitch, and Y Stitch. This pattern is a bit more intermediate, but it’s a great project for those looking for a challenge.
This pattern is available for free as a downloadable file on their Ravelry. And if you choose colors inspired by the sunrise in your sky, it would be a beautiful way to celebrate the solstice in your own unique way.
Cardigans & Accessories:
Winter Solstice Jacket by Drops Design, see the pattern here.
First is the Winter Solstice Jacket by DROPS Design. This stylish jacket uses special stitches like double crochet two together (dc2tog) and double crochet three together (dc3tog). It’s worked in the round, and the armholes are added later. The pattern comes in sizes Small to 3XL.
It also includes a helpful diagram for assembling the pieces, and it’s available for free on their website.
Winter Solstice Wrap by Fiber Flux Blog, see the pattern here.
Or try making the Winter Solstice Wrap by Fiber Flux. This wrap is made of six-pointed stars in sparkly yarns, joined as you go, which makes it a quick project. Each star measures 5 inches wide, and the scarf itself is 15 inches wide by 54 inches long, with 4-inch tassels at each end.

I also love the Crochet Snowflake Bag by Loops and Love Crochet. The bag measures 9 inches wide and tall (not including the handles). It’s worked in rounds with plenty of color changes, as it uses the tapestry crochet method.
This pattern is perfect if you’re comfortable with tapestry crochet and reading a chart, but don’t worry—there are also written instructions for each round to guide you through the process.
