5 Crochet Projects to make with Yarn Scraps

5 Crochet Projects to make with Yarn Scraps

Are you like me, and find that getting new yarn and actually using up all your yarn are two different hobbies? There’s nothing quite like finding the perfect skein for your project, but then you’re left with yarn scraps and not sure what to do with them.

In this post, I’m sharing 5 of my favorite crochet projects to make with your yarn scraps. These ideas are not only practical but also super fun and creative!

1. Scrunchies

Scrunchies are a fantastic way to use up small amounts of yarn, and they’re super trendy right now! You can create scrunchies in all kinds of colors and textures, perfect for adding a pop to your outfit or giving as gifts to friends and family.

I love how versatile scrunchies are. You can use a variety of yarn types—chunky, glittery, or textured yarns. They take very little time to make, and the process is so simple: just crochet a tube and gather it around an elastic band. Voila! You’ll have a chic accessory in no time.

2. Scrap Yarn Clothing

Using yarn scraps for clothing is a fun way to create unique, custom garments. Mix and match different colors and textures to make a piece that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

Consider making bralettes, pants, or even a scrap top. One of my favorites is the scrap top I’m wearing in this post (link in the description box and on my blog). I’ve seen so many amazing scrap yarn clothing ideas on Pinterest lately!

For tops, you can make anything from a cozy cropped sweater to a funky tank top. For bottoms, think about a cute pair of shorts or a skirt. If you're using bulky yarns, you can even use two strands of thinner yarn weights to ensure a consistent fit.

3. Hats

Hats are another great way to use up those yarn scraps. Whether you’re making a beanie, beret, or a slouchy hat, you can easily combine different yarns to create a stylish and functional accessory.

One of my favorite scrap hats was this yarn scrap beanie. I’ll definitely be making more of these as the weather gets colder. If you want to check out my tutorial for this beanie, head to the video linked above.

Mixing yarns can give your hat a fun, textured look. Don’t be afraid to use "ugly" yarns together; you can even tie them all into one easy yarn ball for a cool effect. Plus, it’s a great way to use up those tiny leftover balls of yarn that are too small for other projects.

4. Granny Squares

Granny squares are perfect for using up yarn scraps. They’re classic and versatile, making them ideal for blankets, bags, or even clothing items. You can play with colors and patterns, and there are so many different types of granny squares to explore.

This month, I’m celebrating Granny Square Day on August 15th, so I have to highlight granny squares! I’ll be sharing more about their history in a video later this month, but the origin story of the granny square is all about using up scrap fabrics. They’re literally made for scrap yarns!

Check out my video featuring 100 FREE Granny Square patterns and another with 50 crochet projects to make with granny squares. Recently, I made a granny square dress and a granny square bucket hat that I’m super proud of.

Also make sure to check out my favorite Granny Square MiniDress I made with the ALL in One granny Square yarn by Red Heart, but you can also use scrap yarns to make this. I also had fun making this Granny Square Bucket Hat. You can check out both of the video tutorials below.

5. Stuffing for Amigurumi

Finally, even the smallest yarn scraps can be used as stuffing for amigurumi. They’re perfect for adding a bit of dimension to your creations. Even if you’re not into amigurumi, you can use scraps to stuff 3D flowers or ornaments. Combining scraps with polyfil is also a great option for adding extra fluff.
