Big Twist Yarn Is NOT Gone… But Here’s What You Need to Know

Big Twist Yarn Is NOT Gone… But Here’s What You Need to Know

So... have you heard the buzz about Joann Fabrics closing all their stores? Yeah, it’s wild. And if you’re like me, your first thought was: Wait… what about Big Twist yarn?!

It’s been one of the most affordable and reliable yarns out there, especially for beginners and budget-conscious crafters. But now that Joann’s is shutting down, everyone’s wondering — is Big Twist going away too?

Well, the good news is… not quite. So, we’re diving into the drama and details: what’s really happening with Joann, why Big Twist was almost discontinued, and how Herrschners came in to save the day. 🧶 Grab your coffee, grab your current WIP, and let’s get into it!

What's happening to Big Twist Yarn?

Let’s rewind a bit and talk about how Big Twist yarn became such a staple in the crafting world. As one of Joann’s exclusive in-house yarn brands, Big Twist quickly earned a loyal following thanks to its softness, budget-friendly price point, and wide range of colors.

It’s especially beloved by beginners, students, and anyone working on larger projects like blankets and garments. And since it was only available at Joann stores, it became a big part of that classic in-store yarn haul experience we all know and love.

Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of confusion and misinformation about where Big Twist yarn is made and sourced. One major issue is a website that claims to be the official Big Twist site—but it’s not. It appears to be a hoax. While researching for this video, I almost believed it myself. But something felt off, so I looked closer—and sure enough, the entire site seems to have been created using AI. The photos are AI-generated, the blog posts are written by AI, and the “About Me” page is completely fabricated.

Many beginners and craft businesses love it alike and many love it especially for its softness which placed it step above a lot of other big-box yarns in the same price range.

It quickly built a loyal following — especially among beginners, students, and folks making larger projects like blankets and garments. And because it was exclusive to Joann’s, it also kind of became part of that whole in-store yarn haul experience.

The Rumors Surrounding Big Twist Yarn

Joann filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in January 2025, citing declining foot traffic, inflation, and increased online competition. And for us yarn lovers, it didn’t take long for one big question to hit hard: What does this mean for Big Twist?

Because remember — Big Twist was Joann’s in-house brand. So if Joann disappears, doesn’t that mean Big Twist does too?

Rumors spread fast — some folks on Reddit and TikTok were saying Big Twist was being discontinued. Others claimed Joann had already started pulling it from shelves, especially in locations that were liquidating. And honestly? It was easy to believe. Stores were closing, shelves were half-empty, and clearance signs were everywhere. It started to feel like the end of an era. And you can see my other two blog posts on Joann’s bankruptcy - The Boom and Bust of Joann and RIP Joann, and if you want to know more about all of the details.

And unfortunately as we know there was a lot of confusion and misinformation about where Big Twist was made and sourced. There had been a specific rumor that the yarn was made by Spinrite, which is the parent company of Yarnspirations, and that they would start making it under one of their own labels such as Caron or Red Heart. However, Marly Bird debunked that rumor, and I would definitely check out her blog post - The Truth about Big Twist Yarn: Who Makes it and Where to Buy It

More about Herrschners

So just when it felt like Big Twist was disappearing for good, we got a surprise: Herrschners announced that they’re taking over the Big Twist brand!

Now, Herrschners is a major player in the yarn world. They’ve been around for over 100 years and are known for a huge variety of yarns like Premier, Willow Yarns, Mary Maxim, and Herrschners' own house brands. So when they said they were bringing Big Twist into their lineup, the community lit up with cautious excitement.

But the thing is Big Twist isn’t back in stock yet. Over on their website, Herrschners clearly states that while the brand is coming soon, they haven’t released any details about which yarn types or colors will be available — or even when they'll officially drop. Basically, it’s a big “stay tuned.”

On Reddit, folks in the yarn community are talking about what this might mean — some are hopeful it’ll mean a bigger color selection or new blends, while others are nervous about potential price hikes or formula changes.

Over on Facebook, the sentiment is pretty mixed too. Some people are thrilled to see the brand saved, while others are disappointed they can’t buy their go-to Big Twist Soft or Value lines yet.

So right now, we’re all in this waiting game. Herrschners is encouraging people to sign up for their email list to get updates — and in the meantime, they’re promoting some of their other yarns, which honestly are worth checking out.

Many love and trust herrschners and have shopped there for decades so they believe that Big Twist is in good hands.

What to Expect Next?

So what does all of this mean for you — the everyday yarn lover, crocheter, knitter, and fiber artist?

The good news? Big Twist isn’t gone forever. It’s just in transition. Herrschners stepping in means it will be able to have a second life — and maybe even a better one. That could mean more consistent inventory, better shipping options, or even new product lines down the road.

The not-so-good news? We just don’t know when. If you’re planning projects soon and need to match dye lots or grab more skeins, it might be worth looking for leftovers in your local Joann (if it’s still open), on resale platforms, or in fiber art community groups online.

However it is important to be careful if you are not sourcing it from Joann to make sure that you are getting the real Big Twist yarn. On certain websites like Amazon - there have been fakes spotted so make sure to do some research and read the reviews.

But here's the bright side: this shows that crafters have power. The panic, the demand, the love for this yarn brand? It made enough noise that a huge company said, “Let’s save it.” That’s  truly special.

What this means for us?

With Big Twist now under Herrschners' umbrella, there's a lot to look forward to, but a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Product Availability: While Herrschners has announced plans to carry Big Twist yarn, the exact product lines and color ranges have yet to be disclosed. However, no specific timeline has been provided, so it's essential to stay tuned for updates.
  2. Pricing: Prices may differ from what Joann offered. Herrschners has not yet released pricing details, so it's important to stay updated on their pricing once the products are available. Signing up for Herrschners' email alerts is a good way to receive the latest Big Twist news, including when yarns will be available for order.
  3. Shipping: As Herrschners primarily operates online, consider shipping times and costs when planning your projects. While Herrschners is known for a wide range of yarns and crafts, including their own private label brand, Supreme Worsted, which is similar to Big Twist, the shipping experience may differ from what you were accustomed to with Joann's in-store purchases.

So, where does that leave us? Big Twist isn’t gone — but it’s certainly in a state of flux. The future looks hopeful with Herrschners stepping in, but the reality is, we’ll need to hang tight a little longer to know when our favorite Big Twist yarns will be back in stock.

If you’ve been relying on Big Twist for your projects, now’s a good time to make sure you’re signed up for Herrschners' email alerts — they’re going to be the first to know when Big Twist is officially available. And don’t forget, there are still plenty of great yarn options out there to experiment with while you wait - and I go a bit more into detail about them in my blog post “Where to Buy Yarn Now That JOANN is Closing” definitely make sure you check it out.

At the end of the day, this proves that our voices matter in the crafting world.

So let’s continue to support each other and stay patient.

Keep those hooks moving, and stay tuned for more updates! Let me know in the comments below as well what your thoughts are on all of this.

I’ll keep you posted on all things fiber art in the meantime, and you’ll always be the first to know what’s happening in the crafting world.

So thanks again for hanging out with me and I hope you'll join me in the next one!
