Crochet Floppy Sunhat Pattern

🏝️It's officially beach and pool season, so I wanted to share the perfect crochet project to accompany your fun in the sun!

🌞Whether you're jetting off to a wonderfully tropical destination or splashing around in your neighborhood lagoon, this is the perfect make to take in your tote bag and throw on to protect your lovely skin while also looking chic!

🌈In the spirit of Pride this month, I created mine in rainbow colors. Of course feel free to play around with color and make yours in whatever colors you desire.

Materials:

  • Hobbii 8/8 Rainbow Pack 100% Cotton
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Markers
  • Sewing Scissors

Techniques: 

I am using the US Standard Terms

  • ch(s) : chain (s)
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • st(s): stitch (es)
  • magic ring

 

Gauge: 

4 rows dc in the round ≈ 4 in (10 cm)

If your swatch is bigger or smaller, feel free to adjust the hook size accordingly. 

Pattern:

1st row: Start with red yarn, work a magic ring, chain 3 (counts as dc), work 11 dc sts in the magic ring; sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (12 sts in total)

2nd row: ch 3 (counts as dc), work dc in same st, work 2 dc sts in each st around, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (24 sts in total)

3rd row: ch 3 (counts as dc) work dc in same st, *work 1 dc in the next st, work 2 dc in the next stitch*, repeat from * to * around; sl st in to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (36 sts in total)

4th row: ch 3 (counts as dc) work 1 dc in the next st, work 2 dc sts in the next stitch. * work 1 dc in next 2 sts, and 2 dc in next st, * repeat from * to * around; switch to orange yarn, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (48 sts in total)

5th row: ch 3 (counts as dc), *work 1 dc in the next 3 sts, work 2 dc sts in the next st,* repeat from * to * around; sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (60 sts in total)

6th row: ch 3 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in the next 4 sts, work 2 dc stitches in the next st, repeat from * to * around; sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (72 sts in total)

7th row: ch 3 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in the next 5 sts, work 2 dc sts in the next st, repeat from * to * around, switch to yellow yarn; sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (84 sts in total)

8th to 14th row: Repeat the instructions for the 7th row. Each of these rows will have 84 dc sts in total.

15th row: ch 3, work 1 dc in the same st, work 1 dc in the next 6 sts, work 2 dc sts in the next st, repeat from * to * until the last st; sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (82 sts in total)

16th row: ch 3, work 1 dc in the same st, work 1 dc in the next 7 sts, work 2 dc sts in the next st; repeat from * to * until the last st, switch to dark blue yarn, slip st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (94 sts in total)

17th row: ch 3, work 1 dc in the same st, work 1 dc in the next 8 sts, work 2 dc sts in the next st, repeat from * to * until the last st, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (106 sts in total)

18th row: Repeat the instructions for the 17th row. (106 sts in total)

19th row: Repeat the instructions for the 17th row, switch to purple yarn. (106 sts in total)

20th row: ch 3, work 1 dc in the same st, work 1 dc in the next 9 st, work 2 dc st in the next st, repeat from * to * until the last st; sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (118 sts in total)

21st row: ch 3, work 1 dc in the same stitch, work 1 dc in the next 10 st, work 2 dc st in the next st, repeat from * to * until the last st, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to end the row. (130 sts in total)

22nd row: ch 1, insert craft wire, work 1 sc in same st around craft write, work 1 sc in each st around, sl st to beginning single crochet to end the row (130 sts in total)

Finish off by weaving in the ends of your yarn.
